His latest musical endeavor is a solo masterpiece titled "Johnny Press Nuclear Gypsy," a testament to his unrivaled talent and creative prowess. The just-released record showcases Press's dynamic musicality and innovation, solidifying his status as a guitar virtuoso.

Finally got a new CD player after mine took a crap months ago. Had to only play my LPs, but today I am cranking some of my favorite newer CDs. This one by Boston's own Johnny Press is killer. Love the vocals of Alison McTavish... I'm A Fool is my favorite track. Johnny is currently doing guitar duties for MBE and Burning Sky (Bad Company tribute) check out his website please! I know my rock when I hear it and I would not lead you astray!

NUCLEAR GYPSY

6-song CD

-MAGBASERRY

-GYPSY WIND

-THROW YOU A LINE

-I'M A FOOL

-NO ONE FOR ALL

-THE WIND

After playing on countless records over the years for other artists, six stringer Johnny Press steps out on his own to deliver his first solo album, NUCLEAR GYPSY. Known for recent projects Burning Sky (Paul Rodgers Tribute ) and the Mach Bell Experience, Press is no stranger to the New England music scene.

For the songs on NUCLEAR GYPSY, Press joins forces with drummer Keith Ryan, Bassist Paul Spagnolia and Joe Black, Keyboardist Richie Ramuno and Tim Bradshaw and Aartie Knyff on guitar who also produced the album along with two well seasoned female singers in Alison McTavish and Jodee Frawlee. The overall result is provocative and lends itself to a rockin' sound reminiscent of contemporaries Alannah Miles and Sass Jordan fueled by Johnny's veteran fretboard work.

Tracks of note include Alannah Miles infused title track "GYPSY WIND" (featuring vocals by Jodee Frawlee), the Stevie Nicks flavored "I'M A FOOL"(featuring vocals by Alison McTavish), the Blazing guitar work of "NO ONE FOR ALL" and the albums fiery track, "THE WIND"(propelled by McTavish's gritty lead vocals). Johnny, I finally critiqued Nuclear Gypsy. I hope you like it.

Nuclear Gypsy album by Johnny Press; reviewed by Doug Urquhart

#1 “Magbassery” - 23 seconds of screaming guitar work above a terrifically distorted organ from Richie Ramuno, reminiscent of John Lord from Deep Purple! This song sets the stage for a full album of powerful guitar work. I looked up “magbassery” on google and it said “Song by Johnny Press!” I was impressed. I thought to myself “I know that guy!”

#2 “Gypsy Wind” – Crunchy guitar work behind some powerful, ballsy vocals by Jodee Frawley. I don’t know why I was surprised by Jodee’s vocals; I guess I just didn’t know. If “Black Velvet” wasn’t already a hit, this song could fit nicely into that slot! That Aart Knyff can play him some bass!

#3 “Throw you a Line” – The intro makes me think of early Neil Young and Steeler’s Wheel at the same time. After the short intro, the song is very original. Allison McTavish’s vocal harmonies with herself are stunning! I’ve heard some say that Allison sounds a little like Stevie Nicks but these vocals are better than anything Stevie’s ever done! I wrote in my notes that this was going to be my favorite song on the album…and then I heard “No one for all.” More on that later.

#4 “I’m a Fool” – Allison McTavish again, kickin’ it! I like the backing guitar; clean (maybe a little like Hendrix when he played with the Isely Brothers?) I like the clean guitar at the beginning of the solo and then breaking into a Clapton-like distorted melodic line. Nice vibrato! How does Paul Spagnolia get that great bass sound? I think this song could be on a movie soundtrack.

#5 “No one for All” – OK, this is my favorite song on the album after all! A little disco-y at the beginning and then all-out gutsy and powerful. Love the transition chords at the end of the first guitar solo (at the 2-minute mark.) Jodee again is stellar, especially on her harmonies! I heard what I think was a slide guitar coming out from a stop. Very effective!

#6 “The Wind” – I really like this song! It’s a little bit hypnotic and then the great guitar shakes you out of your complacency. Joe Black on bass and Tim Bradshaw on keys are seamless. You couldn’t ask for anything more.

I didn’t specifically mention the drummer Keith Ryan who played on all tracks. All I can say is that my idea of a great drummer is someone you hardly even notice because he’s doing exactly what is needed. He doesn't rush, he doesn't waver. He's solid as a rock! Keith is all over that stuff!

In short, any of these songs could warrant some radio play or could be in the background of a movie

5.0 out of 5 stars NEW ENGLAND ROCK AT ITS BEST!!!

New England rock music has always been right on top with Los Angeles and San Francisco. With bands like Aerosmith, Boston, J. Geils band, Billy Squire, The Cars and so many more it s no wonder an album such as this will come along and bring those days back like a hurricane. With only six songs on this EP it gives you a taste of one of the finest musicians to come out of New England, Johnny Press.
His bands included, Gross National Productions (GNP), Velocity and Big Guns to name a few. The bands saw studio work, albums and tours. Even opening up for bands such as Frank Zappa. The musicians on this CD have been places and are as good as it gets supporting Press who cranks out guitar riffs that are on fire especially on his song, The Wind, where he pays homage to Jimi Hendrix.
The vocals by McTavish and Frawlee are simply a blast from the past. Gritty and soulful with voices that remind us of Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks.
After many years of playing in bands and doing studio work we finally get to see Johnny Press come out with his own solo work, Nuclear Gypsy.
I can only say that this is your chance to share that experience. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
